But while the Oil & Gas Exhibition provides the inside story of how PDO harvests the Sultantate’s mineral wealth, in EcOman the emphasis is on renewable energy sources as well as ways that we can use less energy to power our lives.
What will you do to help?
After taking on board this wealth of information - and there’s much more to see and do in the centre than we’ve been able to highlight here - you will then be asked to make your own eco pledge before you leave.
Many of us realise that we now need to change our lifestyle to one that is more friendly to our environment. To do so, we must learn how to change ourselves and others to embrace eco-friendly practices, households and industries.
The EcOman Centre explains all this in an exciting and entertaining way.
To understand, we must first learn what energy is.
Energy comes in different forms like heat (thermal), light (radiant), mechanical, electrical, chemical and nuclear. In fact man has used some of these forms of energy for centuries.
Energy is in everything. We use energy for everything we do, from kicking a ball to cooking our favourite food to sending astronauts into space. Energy is there, making sure we have the power to do it all.
Scientific breakthroughs have radically changed our world. For example, the discovery of electricity transformed the way we live, interact and communicate.
It became possible to transform energy stored in fossil fuels into electricity and transport it over vast distances into the more remote areas on earth, helping societies to move forward and opening up new horizons.
However, to appreciate an eco-friendly society we must also understand what the negative effects are from the burning of fossil fuels. Only when we understand these can we be truly informed and motivated to make the changes to sustainable sources of energy.
With this in mind, this museum explains how electricity is made from non-renewable fossil fuels and how these can be replaced by renewable sources like solar energy, wind, geothermal, hydropower and biomass. Last but not least, this centre demonstrates how these ‘Eco-friendly’ sources of energy can be used in our houses.
The EcOman Centre concept is built around three themes: the “Power Tower”, the “Energy Discovery Voyage” and the “Eco Tower”. The two towers are not real towers in the physical sense but are laid out in building parts with two floors; and the voyage is like a connecting corridor between the two towers and forms a contrast with the two spacious experiences provided by the towers.
