Aim

To focus on “THE BASICS ”

Objectives

The 2015 Safety Day theme is follow-up on “THE BASICS” theme of last year where we focused on "Comply" the first pillar of PDO's 3 golden rules. This year we will focus on Intervene,  the second pillar of the Golden Rules - the foundation of HSE rules in our Organization and operations. Safety is core value in PDO and is overarching priority in everything we do in our operations. Our safety performance relies on all of us understanding the basics, e.g. rules, procedures, standards etc and carrying out our day to day activities in a safe manner.

The theme also reflects that we are taking time out for safety by looking at the Basics in our respective operations. We encourage you and your team to think about how we all can take time to understand the Basics and comply with them and Intervene when we see non-compliance or unsafe act or condition. Let us all show that we care for each other's safety and well being at all times.

  • Time to share stories, ideas and concerns on safety.
  • Time to make the connection between all of us, whether in the office or on site.
  • Time to properly plan to work safely and listen to concerns from our staff.
  • Time to show that we care for the safety of all of us at all times.
  • Time to reflect how our actions and behaviors can impact the safety of others. Together we can make Goal Zero a reality.

  • Understand what ‘Intervene’ means to individuals.
  • Raise awareness of intervene (in context of the HSE Golden Rules).
  • Know about the importance of intervention in saving lives and preventing injuries.
  • Understand why some people hesitate to intervene and how to overcome this.
  • Debate how people can react when someone intervenes with them.
  • Facilitate and support implementation strategies to improve intervention.

Directors

Staff (PDO & Contractors)
  • Look for ways to discuss the Basics (Intervene) with your team and at your location.
  • To protect your colleagues by helping them understand the Basics (Intervene).
  • To participate in Safety Day events and challenge your leaders to prepare an effective Safety Day.
Contract Holders
  • Effectively execute Safety Day to respective contractor supported by HSE Team Leaders.
Supervisors
  • To ensure Staff are briefed and reaffirm their commitment to intervene with respect when they observe any non complaince to the basic rules, unsafe act or condition.

Deliverables

At the end of the session every individual should:

  • Understand their roles in the pursuit to Goal Zero.
  • Agree tangible actions which will support Goal Zero.
  • Know what they can do to help a stronger safety culture.
  • Builds confidence to step-in when they observe an unsafe act or condition.
  • Review and affirm their focus and commitment to safety by intervening whenever they observe any non-compliance to the basic rules, unsafe act or condition.
