Cable insulation damage due to welding slack
The Molikpaq Rig Electrician observed one of the electric cables running from the power feed box to the drill floor smoking. Upon investigation, smoke was rising from a single spot on the cable tray and when cabling was disturbed, sparks and a small flame were observed. The cable was immediately unplugged at the feed box along with two further cables. The initial inspection showed a small hole approximately 2cm in diameter located on the surface of the cable due to welding slack. Learnings:
Protect electrical cables from hot sources such as welding slack through fire blankets.
After welding/gas torching work, check electrical cabling for damage and integrity.
Test the ground fault protection on a 4 Yearly basis (Shell Standard)
