The event was staged in honour of the victorious players, officials from the Oman Football Association (OFA), and administrative and technical staff to mark the recent triumph in the 23rd Arabian Gulf Cup.
A traditional Omani band joined in the festivities at PDO’s Mina Al Fahal offices, which were festooned with two giant national flags, and the team showed off the trophy.
As announced in an official ceremony by the Ministry of Sports Affairs on Tuesday (30 January), the Company was pleased to be a gold sponsor in supporting the national football team. PDO has also contributed to four non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to support community initiatives, as part of a long-term social investment commitment.
The Association of the Welfare of the Handicapped Children, Special Olympics Oman, Al Rahma Association for Motherhood and Childhood and Oman Association for the Hearing Impaired were presented with cheques by members of the football team.
Head Coach Pim Verbeek said: “It was a fantastic event. It’s great to see that people are still so happy – and we will not forget: the players, the staff and everybody. It was extra special.
“We play to win tournaments but when you see the reaction of the public, it makes it even better.”
OFA member Dr Ahmed Farsi, who was Head of the Omani Media Committee at the tournament, said: “We would like to thank PDO for organising this event and the role it plays in Oman’s economy and supporting the youth and sports sector, which we consider top priorities.
“We also acknowledge PDO’s efforts in sponsoring Ministry of Sports Affairs’ events and initiatives in Oman.”
PDO Managing Director, Raoul Restucci said: “It was an honour to welcome the all-conquering Omani football team to our headquarters.
“Their historic exploits in the Gulf Cup generated a huge feel good factor among our staff and the nation more generally and will live long in the memory. The players showed just what can be achieved by teamwork, talent and commitment to the cause.
“There was so much anticipation and excitement when the team and support staff arrived at our offices for what was a joyous celebration.”
Talented Omani artists: Salim Al Salami, Sultan Al Busaidi, and Al Harith Al Harthi, also presented artworks commemorating the Gulf Cup victory to the football team.
